Week 3

During week 2 I had interviewed my elder brother asking him about what features he would like on his interactive television, and why they these new concepts and innovations meet his requirements. For his interactive television, the features he wanted to include was:
  • Unlimited gaming download
  • Tabs across the bottom of the itv which can be personalized
  • Instant Messenger
  • 3D Virtual shopping, so you can see the size of the clothes properly
  • Webcam for skyping
  • Access to unlimited music download
  • Motion sensor on top of the itv which follows your hand movements
  • Social networking sites
  • Itv to be flat screen
  • Black
  • Touch
When asking about why he wants these features within his itv I had found out that we both have the same preferability.

Below is an example of the interactive television I designed for my brother:

Week 2

Week 2 allowed me to learn about what interactive television is about. During this lab I had learnt that itv is basically a television with any normal functions. This is having the basic control functions such as on/off, channel selection, volume and pictures qualities. ITV also allows you to record programmes, and to pause/restart current programmes. It provides more complex between program content and the contents of the World Wide Web.

During this research, I had came up with some bullet points that will help me design my interactive television. In my interactive television, I want to include:

  • Flat screen, touch tv
  • Sleek design, preferably white
  • 3D
  • Include all the social networking sites - Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr as well as Skype
  • Webcam which would allow me to take pictures, and video chat
  • Unlimited downloading of music and games
  • Motion sensor so I can choose things while sitting down
  • All the channels, and also allows me to choose between Sky+, Virgin Tv or Freeview
  • Allows me to instant message easily to family and friends
  • Gives me reminders, alarm and weather updates
  • I want my programmes to look like apps, so you can slide across and access them easily
While thinking about the design and features of my interactive television, I have decided that I want to include an remote with it. The features within in interactive remote would include:

  • A sleek design which would be similar to how the interactive television look, this would also be made out of glass and be white
  • Touch remote
  • I would also like a virtual laser keyboard installed within my remote that will be projected onto any flat surface
  • I would like my interactive remote to have voice recognition, so from a distance I can turn the interactive television on/off or adjust the volume
  • This remote would also have a slot for USB access, so you can plug in your USB or mobile phone and can see everything on your interactive television
Once I had listed these down these ideas, I had went through these with my lab tutor before designing my interactive television on Photoshop.

Below is an example of my interactive television:

Week 1

During Week One, as a class we were getting familiar with what Discovering Interaction Design is about. Following this the first coursework was introduced to use via PowerPoint, and this can also be found under UniHub online. Our coursework objective is to design an interactive television with a range of different technology for our own personal use. This would be to design an television with the features that we would want to be included in our 'dream' television. To help us get an idea about what we could include in our interactive television or ways in which we would design it, our lab tutor had shown us an video on youtube.com, A Look Into The Future: A Day Of Glass Where Technology Is Amazing. Watching this video helped me to think about what features I could include in my interactive television. These features would include a flat screen touch tv, with a very sleek glass design. Webcam, internet access and gaming would be included within my television as well as an easier way to have instant chats with friends and social networking. Once I choose how I want my interactive television to look, and what features it would include, I would thoroughly explain about how each feature would work and why I have chose them. I would also talk about how I would test all my ideas and how my new system meets my own requirements. Furthermore, I will survey someone older or younger than me that would have different preferability to how they would want their future interactive television, and I would design this and explain how each feature would work, how they would interact with their itv, what new concept and innovations they have added and why, also how this user could test out their ideas. My last task for this coursework would be to compare and contrast between these two designs that I have created. I would come to an conclusion about which two designs suits me best and why, as well as how I could now create a better design by looking at these two designs side by side.

Examples from the YouTube video:

These above examples show how images can be projected onto a flat glass screen, and you can also receive instant messages via this from friends and family, which you can also reply back instantly with the touch motion.

These print screens show the technology within such small devices. This is an small webcam, which allows you to communicate with whoever whenever with such great picture quality. This webcam also allows 3 way video chats with sounds, picture sharing, file sharing and much more.

On the left hand side, the print screen shows that you can easily do shopping with just a few touches. On the right hand side you can see the sophisticated technology as future may provide 3D virtual television.
